Lawyer Recruiting: Benefits

Below is a summary of some of the benefits available to associates at McGuireWoods. This summary does not represent the complete policy for each benefit. Please contact the Recruiting Department for further information.

Bar Review Course and Bar Exam

The firm reimburses attorneys the tuition for a Bar Review Course, a multi-state testing workshop, the filing fee for the bar exam, and the fee for the cost of character and fitness investigations by the National Conference of Bar Examiners for non-resident applications. The firm also provides a bar study stipend.

Moving Expenses

The firm pays for all reasonable moving expenses, including moving household goods and travel expenses incurred (mileage or plane fare, hotel and meals) if you are required to relocate to another city upon acceptance of the firm's offer. Additionally, the firm will reimburse you for either one trip to the area to locate housing or your travel expenses incurred during the actual move. Moving arrangements are made by the firm under contract with a major moving company.

Medical Benefits

Salaried associates are eligible to participate in the firm’s medical plan on the first day of employment. There is a choice of a Health Maintenance Organization (HMO), a Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) and a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) in all office locations. Enrolling in the HDHP allows you to establish a Health Savings Account. There is no waiting period on preexisting conditions and coverage is available for spouse, domestic partner and/or dependents. 

Dental Benefits

Salaried associates are eligible to participate in the firm’s dental plan on the first day of employment. There is a choice of a High Option and Low Option dental plan in all locations. The High Option plan covers adult and dependent orthodontia. Both plans offer annual exams and cleanings with network providers at no charge. There is no waiting period for pre-existing conditions and coverage is available for spouse, domestic partner and/or dependents. 

Vision Benefits

Salaried associates may elect to participate in the firm’s group vision on the first day of the month following date of hire. This is a comprehensive routine vision plan. Benefits include coverage for an eye exam and contacts or glasses each calendar year. The network provides many independent providers. Coverage is available for spouse, domestic partner and/or dependents.

Retirement Savings Plan

The firm provides a 401(k) Savings Plan for those employees who wish to save for their retirement. All personnel age 18 or older are eligible to participate in the Plan as of their date of hire. Contributions are made via pre-tax payroll deductions and eligible personnel are automatically enrolled in the plan on their date of hire at 4%. Participants may elect to contribute from 1 to 40% per pay period in 1% increments. Eligible participants who are actively employed by the firm on the last day of the Plan Year and have worked 1,000 hours receive a firm match of $0.25 on the dollar for the first $4,000 contributed for a maximum firm match of $1,000. The match is subject to a five-year graded vesting schedule. Participant contributions are immediately vested. Participants choose how their account is to be invested among the available investment funds via a toll free telephone number or on-line. 

Flexible Medical Spending and Dependent Care Accounts

These accounts allow associates to set aside pre-tax dollars to pay for medical, dental, vision and child care expenses not covered by other plans. Participants may contribute up to $2500 in the medical spending and up to $5000 in the dependent care plan each calendar year.

Pre-Tax Dependent Care Plan

All full time personnel and part time personnel, who work at least 22.5 hours per week, may participate in the Dependent Care Plan. Participants may contribute up to $5,000 per Plan Year. There is no waiting period and coverage is effective the first day of employment. Participants may reimburse themselves for qualified dependent care expenses.

Vacation

Associates may take leave as approved by their supervising partner.

Holidays

The firm is closed 8 days per year.

Administrative Leave

Provides for job-related training, civic responsibilities, and other special circumstances.

Family and Medical Leave

Eligible employees are entitled to up to 12 weeks of job-protected, unpaid family or medical leave due to the birth or adoption of a child, a serious health condition for a family member or a serious health condition for yourself in a rolling 12 month period.

Short Term Disability Coverage

Salaried associates are eligible for Short Term Disability (STD) coverage on the first day of active employment. Short Term Disability (STD) benefits are paid at 100% of compensation during the first three months of disability and 80% during the second three months. Generally, Long Term Disability insurance benefits begin after STD benefits are exhausted.

Long Term Disability Insurance

The firm provides Long Term Disability (LTD) insurance for all salaried associates. Coverage is effective first day of employment. Benefits are paid at 60% of salary and after an elimination period of 180 calendar days. Generally, LTD benefits begin after Short Term Disability benefits are exhausted. The firm pays for premiums for LTD insurance.

Business Travel Accidental Death & Dismemberment Insurance

The firm provides $500,000 of Business Travel Accidental Death & Dismemberment insurance on associates and Legal Assistants when traveling on firm business.

Basic Term Life and Accidental Death & Dismemberment Insurance

The firm provides two times your annual salary up to $150,000 of Term Life insurance for all full time personnel. The firm pays the premiums for Term Life insurance.

Supplemental Term Life and Accidental Death & Dismemberment Insurance

Supplemental Term Life and Accidental Death & Dismemberment insurance is available to all associates on a voluntary basis. Coverage may be elected for self, spouse and dependents.

Long Term Care Insurance

All Partners and employees (full time and part time personnel with a permanent work schedule of at least 17.5 hours per week) are eligible. Long Term Care Insurance provides a cash benefit for nursing home or assisted living care. Options are also available for inflation protection and home care. Coverage may be elected for yourself, your spouse, your parents or grandparents. Coverage may also be elected for your spouse’s parents or grandparents.

Employee Assistance Program

The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) provides all employees and their families with a source of outside professional counseling when experiencing problems of a personal or work-related nature. This program is an immediate "barrier-free" access to professional counselors twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, nationwide via a toll free number. This service is strictly confidential (anonymous when desired) and not shared with anyone at McGuireWoods. The EAP also offers dependent and elder care resource and referral services.

Charitable Contributions

The firm will match each attorney’s contribution up to $100 to law schools and law-related organizations. This policy applies to gifts made during the current year. Reports are submitted annually to the Contributions Committee for matching purposes.
